Site safety presentation given to new supervisors
New supervisors on the Glengall Road project received a site safety presentation this week to ensure they are aware of the specific safety rules on the scheme.
On 16th November, our in-house Safety Health Environment and Quality (SHEQ) Advisor, Mark Armstrong joined Site Manager, Josh Peach to deliver the Site Supervisor Safety presentation to all supervisors that had recently started on the project.
Held within our onsite meeting room, the purpose of the session was to thoroughly explain to the supervisors what is expected of them when working on a major project such as Glengall Road.
Due to precast nature of the project, the importance of permits and where operatives could potentially need to enter areas close to FPM install zones was explained. What a suitable and sufficient Friday pack should contain was also discussed.
Looking closely at Equans' 12 golden rules in terms of safety, pre-enrolment and the induction of new staff, as well as what's required in terms of starting right, pre-start briefings and the role DABS play on site were among other topics discussed in detail throughout the presentation.
Further explanation was given regarding our weekly SHEQ inspections and how and why clear up notices would be given and their impact. The online delivery system was explained as well as the relevance and importance of the pitlanes on site. The supervisors were then run through our expectations of them and their operatives, looking at key points such as the daily DABS, storage, COSHH, housekeeping, waste, use of MEWPS and mobile towers, RPE and the use of tools amongst other key items.

Equans provides work experience for Royal Engineer
Equans provided a work experience opportunity for a member of the Royal Engineers last month to aid his transition to a potential career within construction after leaving the forces.
On 30th August, Royal Engineer, Ashley Moore was invited to undertake work experience on the Glengall Road scheme in an effort to give him an insight into the construction industry and the potential career he could transition into after leaving the armed forces next year.
As part of our ongoing commitment to providing employment and skills opportunities, Site Manager, Josh Peach worked closely with BuildForce, a company whom specialise in helping military personnel transition to civilian life and careers within construction to arrange for Ashley to spend the day on site, giving him a valuable insight into the modern methods of construction used at Glengall Road.
After receiving our standard site safety induction, Josh was on hand to give Ashley a personal escort around the live site so Ashley could learn about site management and routes into the industry, all whilst having his questions answered.
Grateful for this valuable experience, Ashley commented: Josh's comprehensive brief about the London School of Economics new student accommodation was very impressive. He gave me an informative video presentation with a detailed walking tour of what was currently happening on the construction site. He was very keen to display how sustainable for the environment the new accommodation would be, and how serious Equans are for standards of work and completion times.
"He patiently answered my questions about how I could bridge the gap from my current occupation with the Royal Engineers and what transferable skills I may have. It was very useful and his answers will help me in my transition to career in construction."

Team achieves full marks for Considerate Constructors Scheme audit
After receiving their third audit from the Considerate Constructors Scheme this month, the Glengall Road site team have achieved top marks for the second time!
The team achieved the full 15 marks possible in each of the three categories of 'Respect the Community', 'Care for the Environment' and 'Value their Workforce', achieving an impressive score of 45/45 for the second time.
On 9th August, a CCS monitor joined Site Manager, Josh, and Project Manager, Alex, for an on-site tour to carry out their 3rd audit of the site, commenting things like "Overall, the site demonstrated excellent practices across the checklist to meet the Code of Considerate Practice. The team has established a good relationship with the local community and is tracking well against ambitious targets - as set out in their comprehensive Employment and Skills Plan.
"The team's passion for the scheme and dedication to making a positive impact on the community are a clear driving force behind the project's outstanding achievements and high score."
The CCS is an independent organisation founded to raise standards in the construction industry to ensure all construction sites present an image of competent management, efficiency, awareness of environmental issues and above all neighbourliness. Monitors from the scheme regularly audit our sites to ensure we are adhering to the scheme’s Code of Considerate Practice which is designed to encourage best practice beyond statutory requirement.
Each audit is split into three categories; respect for the community, protecting the environment and valuing the workforce each with a potential score out of 15 with a total combined max score of 45 available. To score above 13 in any category warrants an excellent level of achievement for that category.
Congratulations to Joshua, Alex and the rest of the site team, and well done for achieving top marks again.

Equans provide support for local business
This June, Equans improved food options for the Glengall Road site team following a new partnership with local business, Rehoboth Grill House, whom provide restaurant quality Caribbean food.
Equans Site Manager, Josh Peach identified the need to provide additional food options for his site team and operatives as local sources are quite sparse meaning many staff members frequently visited the local supermarket. This was not only inconvenient in terms of distance but also meant putting money into a large corporation rather than supporting local residents and businesses.
After a discussion with the site Traffic Marshal, Winston, local resident, Karen, was introduced to Josh and they discussed how her local catering business could help resolve this problem.
"I feel very welcome on the project, the Site Manager, Josh has been brilliant with me. I look forward to continuing to work on the project and keep working with Equans. Thank you so much for the opportunity. Again, thank you to all the team for being so welcoming to me and my family." Karen Wallace, Owner of Rehoboth Grill House
With an initial trial passed with flying colours, the perfect solution was found with all parties benefitting - the site is now provided with delicious home-made Caribbean food whilst Equans can also help support someone from the local area make an additional income. It's also been decided that this new partnership with Karen will continue for the remainder of the scheme.
"It's fair to say the food has gone down extremely well with all members of the team. Karen will now be working within the canteen on site serving various different foods on different days of the week. This will continue throughout the project as we all love the food but equally want to support local people and their businesses." Equans Site Manager, Josh Peach
